Tuncay’s First Match: Boro 0-Schalke 3
Tuncay Sanli was in the starting line-up for the first time for Boro but Jeremie Aliadiere, Stewart Downing, Julio Arca and Chris Riggott were not risked after picking up slight knocks.
The Germans were backed by a healthy following while Boro had just a handful of fans, but the Teessiders made their voices heard as ever as they went through the full Riverside repertoire.
As the Boro fans continued to make themselves heard their team started to see more of the ball and Johnson shot wide from Tuncay’s pass.
Next the Turkish superstar looked lively as he supplied Yakubu, but the Nigerian’s shot on the turn was well over.
Boro were playing with what looked like a fluid 4-4-2 formation, with Yakubu up front and Morrison and Tuncay alternating between playing alongside him and on the right-hand side.
The Boro fans’ most bizarre chant of the night was ‘There’s only one Di O’Connell’, presumably a tribute to the club’s community liaison officer - no longer an unsung hero!
